El Festival Gastronomico de Medellin 2012

A couple of weekends ago, I went to a food and wine festival called Festival Gastronomico de Medellin. It was a four day event with food vendors from restaurants around the city, a few food suppliers, a few breweries from Colombia and a roomful of wine.

The food part wasn't too exciting. There were few free samples - the only exciting ting was chunks of white cheese that was melted on a hot skillet and served with a toothpick... rubbery goodness. All the food booths were selling their menu items at a cost between $5 and $10.

this head was the basis for a porchetta sandwich

scenes from the food court:

this is a cazuela- chunks of pork, chicken and beef in a tomato-based stew with parmesan cheese (not the real stuff) sprinkled on top and plantain chips sprouting from the cup.

Ron Medellin (ron is Spanish for rum) had a tasting area and served a tasty sweet pork tenderloin nibble on the side...

The one big highlight for me was the coffee demonstration. I got to try some coffee brewed using the inversion method (in the foreground) and the gravity method (the fourth thing in black and clear plastic). The former was interesting, though pricey but less flavorful than the other two methods in the middle (french press and drip) and the gravity seemed like a lot of effort to push the water through the grinds.

These are beans from nearby in the Antioquia region...

And into the wine tasting room.  Riedel glasses were sold for 10.000 COP (a little more than $10) and used for the tastings.  Most of the wines were from South America, of course. But there was a section for US wines. Unfortunately we were represented by Boones, Gallo, Paul Masson and Barefoot.
