Buenos Aires

Last month, my brother was able to join in my adventure for ten days. We met in Buenos Aires. Here are some highlights...

The first thing that I noticed about the city was the vast amounts of street art.

We stopped at the cemetary with Eva Perron (a.k.a. Evita).  I was more facinated with the facial hair on the statues of the men than anything else....

In the San Telmo neighborhood, there is a section with a couple handful of cartoon statues. The first one seems to be the favorite of Argentina and Brazil - Mafalda... She reminds me a an old comic character from the US named Nancy...

and even the street crossing signs get in on the act...

one of my favorite things was a big band drum show called La Bomba de Tiempo. This was also my first lesson in how late things really start in BA nightlife. The show did not start until 1am and lasted for a solid two hours.

Of course, we had to stop at the local futbal stadium and take a tour of the museum and see the field. Unfortunately there was no game while we were in the city.

Also in the same neighborhood as the stadium is a section of art spaces, street art and murals...

And of course we had to eat the local beef.  Argentina is know for its great steak, but what I really was surprised about was the quantity and price of such steak.  Most cuts go for about $20 or less (even with the low exchange rate of 5 pesos to 1 US $... whereas the black market will give 8 pesos to $1US).  I really love skirt steak!

One portion of skirt steak is on the plate AND the metal grill in the background... I estimate about 0.75 lbs of meat

dipping sauce for bread and meat
pork shoulder braised in port wine with shredded sweet potato and a bed of mashed potatos... to sweet for  my taste, though

the above pork did come with a caramelized onion wrapped in bacon

in the foreground is wild boar tenderloin, in the back is a prime rib cut (without the rib)

a cross section of the prime rib

pork chops with fig and some salad... possibly the best pork in Argentina... if not just the most tender pork

beef carpaccio

know your cuts of meat... en espaƱol
